CD - THE LETTERS OF PAUL OF THE CROSS

In 2000 the Passionist Holy Cross Province (USA) published a three volume edition of the letters of St. Paul of the Cross. This was the first time that English speakers had access to all the existing letters of the founder of the Passionist Congregation.

Once we had access to the letters in English another set of questions arose. How best to access them and what about indices to aid further research? To this end conversations inevitably led to the possibility of creating a searchable database which could make the Letters of St. Paul of the Cross available in an electronic format.

Fr. Christopher Monaghan, C.P., from the Endeavour Hills Community in Melbourne (Australia) took up the task of coordinating the work of gathering the Letters of St. Paul of the Cross on a CD with a searchable database programme. The CD has been designed to run on Windows 98 through to Windows XP and it also functions on MacOS.

Copies of this new CD - The Letters of Paul of the Cross, A Searchable Database - are now available from the Holy Spirit Province Provincial Office. Cost $25 AUD plus postage.

Passionist Sisters Mother General Visits Us

FROM OUR MAN AT THE UN

Fr. Kevin Dance CP wrote this week (last week of June) from the Immaculate Conception Passionist Community in Jamaica in the Bronx of New York where he is the representative of all Passionists at the United Nations. He spoke of one part of his work, namely the task of registering "Passionists International" as the body he represents, thus including the whole of the Passionist Family. Kevin also described his arranging for the legal submissions which, after a trial period of two years, will result in the Passionist Family having full non-Government Office recognition with the United Nations, with full rights to be heard at the United Nations as a world wide Congregation in the Church. Kevin at the moment represents us by courtesy of the recognition that the Sisters of Mercy have been given after a number of years at the United Nations.

PREPARING FOR THE PROVINCIAL CHAPTER

Two Provincial Assemblies were held in April as we began as a group throughout  Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea to prepare to enter more fully into this year of Chapter.   The first was held in Templestowe from 23rd to 24th of April; the second was at Belrose from 29th to 30th of April.

The Assemblies were addressed by the Provincial  as he summarised what is really the draft of his report to the Province for the four years since he was elected to this leadership position

The Assemblies also discussed the material which had been collated from the Community Consultations earlier in the year

In the next few months a member of the Chapter Preparation Group will again visit each of the communities, leading to another Assembly in Templestowe at the end of August.

In May and June another element of the Chapter process will be present when Fr Robert Joerger CP, one of the General Council members in Rome, will conduct Canonical Visitation of the Province and each of the communities. Fr Robert has already arrived in Sydney and is having preliminary meetings with the Provincial and his Council.

In early July many of the members of the Province will make a Retreat in Melbourne under the guidance of Fr Campion Murray OFM

Fr Ottaviano Aegidio CP, Superior General, will make a whistlestop Fraternal Visitation to the communities of the Province and will then preside at the Chapter itself which commences on the 19th October, the Feast of St Paul of the Cross.

He returns to South Australia some years later with the experience of working in the Vanimo diocese or Papua New Guinea.

Fr. John Pearce CP facilitated meetings at the Monastery on last Friday when the community participated in discussions in preparation for this year's Provincial Chapter.

John is Pastor of Endeavour Hills, a Passionist Parish in outer suburban Melbourne. He is a member of the Preparatory Committee for the Chapter which is held every four years. This year our Superior General, Fr. Ottaviano Egidio CP, will come from Rome to preside at the Chapter in Templestowe, Victoria . The Chapter will commence on the Feast of St. Paul of the Cross, October 19th

A new Deacon in the Province

We congratulate Jacob Kuman CP who this past Sunday was ordained to the Diaconate by Archbishop Brian Barnes OFM, the Archbishop of Pt Moresby..

The ordination took place during the usual 9.30am Mass in a packed
Passionist parish Church of St Joseph, Boroko, where Jacob has been serving pastorally for a year. The ordination was a very prayerful and moving liturgy with music leadership provided by Jacob's fellow students from the PNG national seminary.

Two other bishops: Cherubim Dambui (Auxiliary of Port Moresby) and Henk Kroenenberg (Bougainville), and about a dozen priests concelebrated at the Mass, assisted by a recently ordained deacon classmate of Jacob.
Many religious from Xavier Institute in Pt Moresby and from around the Archdiocese were also present.

Fr. Paul Mercieca CP, the Parish Priest of Baro, represented the
Passionists stationed in the Vanimo region. There was also good
participation by the parishioners of St Joseph's parish which expressed the esteem in which Jacob is held. An enjoyable luncheon followed the Mass in the parish hall.

With our whole Province, and with the Passionist Family throughout Papua New Guinea, New Zealand and Australia, we congratulate Jacob and promise him our prayerful support as he continues his journey toward the Priesthood.

After 17 years of very dedicated service guiding the Passionist Family Group Movement in this State, Kathy and Denis Hennessy have decided it is time to hand over the responsibility to others.

Passionist Companions

Over the past few months, a Working Party has been preparing a definite framework for the proposed Passionist Companions. This was submitted to the Provincial Synod in December.
Fr. Denis Travers CP, Provincial, has described the result of the submission:In his December 2002 Province Newsletter the Provincial wrote:
"The Report of the Passionist Companions Working Party was well presented and equally well received by members of the recent Provincial Synod in Templestowe (Vic). It received strong affirmation as did the efforts of the Committee members themselves under Gary Perritt's leadership. I have expressed our thanks to all the committee for their excellent work on our behalf. There now seems to be no obstacle to moving forward to establish - in an interim way - a Passionist Companions Movement. Indeed, we can say there is a strong support and expectation that we do so. In essence, as a Province we are now moving to set in place a new structure - with its own boundaries and identity - that will serve to promote the Passionist Charism. The new movement will be flexible in nature, embrace multi level types of membership and will be open to professed and laity together.

This is an exciting and rich moment for us and the Provincial Council will be able to set this process in motion more formally at its next meeting in January 2003."

Passionist Celebrate 150 Years in North America

Fr. Denis Travers CP, Provincial, represented our province in Philadelphia when Passionist men and women, professed and Associates, gathered to celebrate from August 30th to September 2nd the 150 years of Passionist presence in North America.

We quote from Larry Rywalt CP in describing the jubilee celebrations.

Perhaps the words "extraordinary" and "inimitable" could be used to describe the Sesquicentennial celebrations of the Passionists in Philadelphia during the weekend of Aug. 30th to Sept. 2, 2002. Together with the members of their Passionist extended family, the Passionist nuns and Sisters, the joy of these days were also shared by several hundred laity, members of the Passionist "family" of blood relatives, friends and benefactors. The reality of uniting all of these people representing every sector of the country as well as Canada and beyond was truly an "extraordinary" feat. Someone described the weekend gathering as a prelude to experience of heaven where we hope to be reunited one day with all of our loved ones and all who have shared a part of our lives, gathered around the throne of the Lamb. Those who planned the celebration admitted that their original expectations were underestimated that  perhaps 200-300 people might attend. The reality of 800 participants made us realize that indeed they had planted the seeds and watered them, but it was the Spirit of God who gave the super-abundant growth.

It was also noted that, almost miraculously, there were no glitches during the weekend -  no one became seriously ill or experienced any other major distress. The spirit of genuine desire to learn more about the charism and ministries of the Passionist Congregation through teaching experiences and informal sharing of life stories, could best be described as "inimitable". Possibly never before in the 150-year history of the Congregation in America has the Passionist charism been so experienced and celebrated. In this, and many other ways, it could be said that St. Paul of the Cross had interceded for his spiritual sons and daughters and given them a "birthday" gift the likes of which surpassed our wildest dreams. It was no less than an echo of the amazement of the original four Passionists who crossed the Atlantic and arrived in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh in 1852, setting foot in a land that indeed was rich in promise and possibility. Together with the psalmist we sing of the marvels of this celebration: "The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy!"

ORDINATION OF FATHER BRENDAN CONNELL CP

The Passionist Family throughout the Province rejoices  and gives thanks to God at the Ordination to the Priesthood of Brendan.

The Ordination Ceremony took place on Saturday 21st September in the home parish of his parents, Croydon, Victoria.

Brendan celebrated his First Mass of Thanksgiving on Sunday  22nd September in the Church of St Paul the Apostle, Endeavour Hills. This is the outer suburban Passionist parish in Melbourne where Brendan has been ministering as a Deacon this past year.

We are hoping that Brendan will be able to celebrate Eucharist in the next few weeks in the Glen Osmond/Parkside parish.

We were represented at the Ordination by Fr Joe Furst CP, Br Jeff Daly CP, Sr Joan Mary CP, Sr Subha CP, Sr Jasmine CP and our beloved Associate Julia Stephens.

Footnote: Brendan spent most of 1999 and 2000 on pastoral placement at the South Australian Passionist Community in Pt Augusta.
Brendan brings a wealth of experience to his life commitment
--he served as a lay Missionary in the Kimberleys and in Africa, was youth minister in a rural parish of Tasmania and commenced his studies for the Priesthood with the White Fathers in Ireland.

Passionists in PNG

Currently, the Passionists are located at Boroko, Port Moresby , in the villages of Baro and Mambudu near Vanimo, in Vanimo town and in Weewak.

Fr Tony Egar CP is the student Formator, Fr Aidan Kay CP (Parish Priest of Saint Gabriel's, Boroko) & Fr Phil Smith CP who will be remembered from the time he was convalescing at Holy Cross after a heart operation in March 2000. There are also four young men in Formation living in Boroko.

Br Jerome Dunn CP who spent most of last year at Holy Cross, is in Vanimo where he is the director of postulants who are in Formation.

One of the disturbing elements in PNG is the incidence of crime, particularly aggravated burglary and robbery, and while he was there, Fr Brian heard many tales from the different religious.

The Passionists property at Boroko is surrounded by a high fence with barbed razor wire on top. Entry is via a remote controlled lock and recently,
Fr Aidan Kay CP has been attacked twice while entering the property. In the second attack he was cut with a knife and his vehicle was stolen and trashed.

Talking about his accommodation from a visit earlier in 2002, Fr Brian Traynor said "It's a great environment for getting work done at night. Reading the paper doesn't take long. My room was simple and there is no phone. So there are no distractions; it is quiet and reflective. It is something like Paul of the Cross wanted".

The life and mission of the Passionists in PNG is a difficult one, but is one consistent with
St Paul's intention to have his followers live in 'retreats' where they pray, study and prepare for their labours, or rest after them. Working among people of a vastly different culture, with limited resources and with their own numbers declining, adds to the difficulties but we hope and pray that through their endeavours and their example, more labourers will come to work in the vineyard of the Lord.

PASSIONIST REPRESENTATIVE AT THE UNITED NATIONS

Late last year, Fr  Kevin Dance CP was appointed by the Passionist General Council to represent the Passionist Family at the United Nations for an initial  period of two years. In this role, he is under the auspices of, and accountable to, a new Solidarity Commission of the Congregation chaired by another Australian, Fr. Jeff CP, General Consultor in Rome.

Fr. Kevin is the first Passionist appointed to this  position and his appointment is a great recognition of his talents and capacity.

Fr. Kevin has now settled into his new role and his new home with the Passionist Community in New York. He sent the following greeting by e-mail last month, just too late to include in the Newsletter, and we apologise that part of his message has become dated. Nevertheless, it was great to hear from him.

"Belated Easter greetings to all. I hope that this finds you well.

Things are going well here. It is an enormous challenge. I can see that it is possible to have some influence, if one is ready to work hard, to work in with other Non-Government Organisations and to put in the hard yards of getting to know and becoming known by government representatives. The NGO community is composed of the whole spectrum of viewpoints from every point on the compass, but I sense that the majority of us have in common a commitment to social justice and a care for the poor people of the world who are very much at the mercy of the OECD, governments and the international financial institutions. I sense that if the UN were emptied out of NGOs, the poor countries would be worse off than they are. NGOs are the ones who consistently try to bring values and ethical discussions into the arena.

Spring has finally arrived and is flaunting her beauty everywhere. The transformation in the locals is also a wonder to behold. I noticed in the past few days that more people are smiling and some of the tension seems to have lessened as the sun shines and the spring flowers are blooming and the trees are assuming their green mantles almost as you look.

Herewith is a little briefing note which I sent to the members of the Congregation. I thought you might be interested. Please keep me in your prayers as I do you and your family".

Fr Kevin's Briefing Note:

Pope John Paul II, in Redemptoris Missio, speaks of new areopagi where our Christian witness and our evangelising efforts must take place in a world convulsing with deep changes. Our General Chapter in Brazil 2000 saw the need to announce the Gospel of Life in new places and new ways. The United Nations was seen as one such areopagus calling for our prophetic presence.

Father Ottaviano D’Egidio, in presenting the Chapter document, reminds us that we live in times characterised by “the phenomenon of ‘globalisation’ and the restless concern of men and women”. He also challenged us with these words: “Looking upon our Crucified and Resurrected Lord, we cannot turn our backs on the struggle against the powers of evil, which offend and destroy man and conspire against human dignity as well as the dignity and beauty of all creation. Humanity’s Calvary is likewise God’s Calvary and constitutes the outermost frontier where we are bound to be present”

Economic globalisation touches everyone but benefits only the few. We are challenged to do what we can to bring about a globalisation that is not pushed by greed, but shaped by Gospel values – solidarity, inclusiveness, justice and a future that can be sustained.

As a Passionist just starting to work with the United Nations and other world bodies to bring a Christian dimension to their decisions I count on your prayer and support. We want to let the voices of the poor and the excluded be heard. The UN is far from perfect, but it is the only forum that is open to all peoples to work for a more just, humane and peaceful world.

Working in cooperation with members of other Congregations, we have the chance to influence the decision makers to find fairer alternatives to the present dominant model of economic and cultural globalisation. This is so important if we are to support the work of our members at the grassroots level.

Any commitment to work for systemic change at the international level must be closely linked with the work of our Passionist sisters and brothers for the most excluded and poor “on the ground”. Your love and service give credibility to those of us who work in world forums such as the United Nations.

The theme of our recent General Chapter was “Passion of Jesus Christ  – Passion for Life” I want to support your passion for life by bringing the voice of the crucified and the poor you serve to the ears of the policy makers of the world. I believe that our presence at the UN is a new way of proclaiming the Gospel of the Passion: Passion for Life.
