Message From Fr. General to Communities of the Congregation

THE PASSIONISTS IN PAPUA NEW GUINEA FOR FIFTY YEARS

This year marks the 50th Jubilee year of our arrival in Papua New Guinea to begin sharing the Passionist Charism - as we have known and lived it – with the people of Papua New Guinea.

We give thanks to God as the Passionist Family reflects on the selflessness and dedication of our men and the lay missionaries and women religious who accompanied them over the years.

The Province has been enriched by working with the people of Papua New Guinea who have taught us many things about the suffering of Jesus and the redemptive power of selfless love.

During the weekend of May 14th – 15th the members of the Passionist Vicariate in Papua New Guinea gathered in Port Moresby to celebrate the arrival of the first missioners. This occasion was marked by a gathering of the men themselves for a time of sharing and forward planning, a dinner for many of the friends and benefactors of the Passionists in Papua New Guinea and a wonderful mass in the newly renovated St. Joseph ’s Church in the Passionist Parish of Boroko.

The Apostolic Nuncio for Papua New Guinea together with the Archbishop of Pt. Moresby and his auxiliary Bishop, and Sister Joseph Martin CP from Wewak all joined the Passionist Family in Papua New Guinea for this occasion. Twelve hundred people gathered for this thanksgiving mass. With the present Regional Superior, Fr. Tony Egar CP, and the Provincial, Fr. Denis Travers CP, were three former Regional Superiors, Frs. Pat Cooper CP, Kevin Hennessy CP and Joachim Rego CP.

THANKS FROM FR DENIS TRAVERS CP

                 Kath Travers

We give thanks for the life of Kathleen Travers who died peacefully at the Mary Potter Hospice, North Adelaide, at 1.30 am on Sunday 20th March 2005.

We express our sincere condolences to her daughter Maureen, her sons Fr. Denis CP (our Provincial), Leon, Mark and Greg, her son in law and daughters in law, her ten grandchildren, her sister Margaret and the many members of her extended family.

Kath has been a devoted regular weekly Volunteer at the Monastery for 20 years, working in the Bursar's office with Marie Organ, and also looking after marriage, baptism and other sacramental records. She was a trusted confidant and friend to our Community and staff members and many parishioners. Her practical wisdom, her down to earth approach, her loving interest in each of us and her quiet encouragement is a precious memory for the Passionist Family.

With her beloved family, a large congregation gathered on Wednesday 23rd March at 10.30 am to celebrate a Thanksgiving Mass for her life, in this Monastery Church of St Paul of the Cross, where her son Denis took his First Vows as a Passionist and later was ordained a Priest, and where she has worshipped at the 8.00 am Mass every Sunday.

Fr Denis Travers CP was the Principal Celebrant and gave the homily. Archbishop Philip Wilson, Archbishop of Adelaide presided and one of the many concelebrants was Archbishop Leonard Faulkner, Emeritus Archbishop. Many brother Passionists from various houses in the Province were among the concelebrants, as well as a number of priests from the Archdiocese of Adelaide and the Diocese of Port Pirie.

We place Kath into the hands of her loving God, as she joins her husband Jim, her youngest son Stephen and her parents in the company of the Saints forever. May she rest in peace.

Fr. Denis Travers CP, Provincial, writes on the Indian Ocean Tsunami

The suffering of our neighbouring nations in the Indian Ocean over Christmas and New Year has moved all of us. Sadly, the tsunami reminds us of the suffering endured by the people of Aitape, Papua New Guinea on July 17 1998. It is moving to read that the Governor General of Papua New Guinea, Sir Paulias Matane when launching the  People Helping People appeal in Port Moresby stated that Papua New Guineans would help because other countries came to help them after the Aitape tsunami in 1998, when 3,000 people died.

The scale of this disaster is incredibly higher, but again we can assist. We can do no less at such a time. The basic goodness of people shines through in such moments of loss and suffering. We respond from our own inner reality - we are created in the likeness of the Compassionate God. Like the theme of the PNG appeal, people want to help people - our fundamental humanity and compassion frees us from self interest and unites us at a level that transcends so many other barriers. A wonderful feature of the world community response at this time is the fact that in many countries public outcry has forced Governments to raise the amount of assistance. In some countries too, public contributions have actually overshadowed official amounts.

Our thoughts go out also to the Passionist Sisters. A number of Sisters in India have lost loved ones and many of the Sisters themselves come from areas affected by the tsunami.
